It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Kick-Off 2015: Heroes vs. Villains Theme Proves to be a Win for PSA Employees and Client, the House of Ruth

This year PSA did it again…another fun-filled, creative, and successful Kick-off! Each year, the event is held in February to celebrate the past year’s accomplishments while setting the course for the year ahead.

The themes, which in the past have included PSA Olympics, PSA Palooza, PSA Goes Hollywood, Back to the Future and Saturday Night Live, help PSA build a more close-knit, collaborative culture with a fun environment and is a special way to elevate the spirit of employees (especially during these long, cold winter months). For this year’s Heroes vs. Villains theme all employees were encouraged to attend the Kick-off dressed either as a hero or a villain, which fed into a friendly competition during the six games peppered throughout the event. Contestants from both sides competed for individual cash awards while also accumulating team points towards the grand prize, which was an opportunity for the winning team to select a non-profit client to receive a donation from PSA.

PSA employees show their spirit through inventive costumes, cheering for fellow colleagues’ accomplishments and joining in the games. This year’s Heroes vs. Villains event featured games such as themed Trivia, Stomach of Steel – a hot wings eating competition, and Smashinary – Pictionary with Hulk hands, among others.

In the end, the heroes proved victorious over the villains in the games and chose the House of Ruth to receive PSA’s $2,000 donation. The organization is one of the nation’s leading intimate partner violence centers, helping thousands of battered women and their children find safety and security.

Beyond giving back to the community, Chip Lewis, PSA’s Managing Director, considers Kick-off as a chance to inspire, show his gratitude, honor employees, outline goals for the year ahead and let his fun personality shine. Dressed as Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Mr. Lewis quoted him by saying, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” With this reference, he indicated that change is inevitable and in order to be successful, PSA must continue to build a team culture that supports innovation, improvement and growth, which in turn will lead to better client service, stronger partnerships and will strengthen our ability to contribute to the community.

This year’s Kick-off also featured a unique, themed happy hour set up by Baltimore’s Premier Event Solutions and catered by Chef’s Expressions. At the conclusion of the event, white fog started creeping through under the doors from the PSA café into the conference room. When the doors opened, surprised and excited employees were greeted by a blast of fog, which filled the room. The café was dark and decorated with black drapes and the latest iridescent lighting effects. It was transformed from a place where people grab their coffee in the morning to a Mad Scientist Bar and a Captain America grilled cheese station. Servers and bartenders also dressed the part were working the room offering bubbling, smoking, color-changing drinks and themed hors d’oeuvres such as Aquaman’s seared diver scallops, the Incredible Hulk’s bison slider, and the Green Lantern’s crab and cucumber soup shooter.

While it’s always sad to see Kick-off come to an end, we are so excited about all the accomplishments and goals for 2015! And of course PSA’s Spirit Committee is already brainstorming about next year’s Kick-off!
