Liability Claims Specialist

Job Summary

The Liability Claims Specialist is responsible for handling general liability and professional liability claims for healthcare clients, providing monthly claim summaries to clients, and handling releases of medical records. The specialist works with multiple insurance carriers, defense attorneys and client representatives to obtain the optimum claim outcome.

Essential Functions

  • Handle all facets of liability claims, including investigation, litigation management and resolution in cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Work closely with clients, defense counsel and carrier representatives to develop litigation and settlement strategies.
  • Provide monthly summaries to clients for significant developments, new and closed claims.
  • Handle release of medical records for clients in accordance with HIPAA and HITECH laws & regulations.
  • Handle financial aspects of position in a timely and accurate manner, including check requests, reserve recommendations, carrier reimbursement requests, and fee invoices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all claim activities and financial records in company database and account management system. Maintain a diary system for all claims.
  • Provide training to client staff as needed.
  • Analyze claims status, prepare and/or present reports to clients as requested
  • Keep abreast of all new developments in the claim arena through periodicals, seminars, membership organizations and carrier meetings
  • Maintain an extensive knowledge of insurance coverages, claim law, HIPAA regulations and medical malpractice law.
  • Attend hearings, trials, and mediations when appropriate
  • Other assignments as directed by management

Expectations/Desired Skills

  • Develop positive relationships with PSA associates, clients, and carriers
  • Act as a resource/point of contact for complex claims issues
  • Reduce loss costs associated with claims
  • Oversee insurance representatives and case manager’s handling of claims and aggressively pursue timely closure of all claims
  • Assist in investigations of claims, compensability and damages
  • Participate in claims strategies development with insurance representatives and attorneys
  • Develop, facilitate, and present effective claims management training and resources to educate our clients
  • Analyze claims status, prepare and/or present reports to Account Executives and clients as requested
  • Keep abreast of all new developments in the claim’s arena through periodicals, seminars, membership organizations and carrier meetings
  • Maintain an extensive knowledge of insurance coverages and markets
  • Maintain a claims status diary of select client’s claims
  • Attend hearings, trials, and mediations when appropriate
  • Document claim activity on agency and account management system
  • Continuing education as necessary to maintain Adjuster Licenses
  • Other assignments as directed by management

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of multi-line commercial insurance claims management experience in the private, public or insurance sectors
  • Medical malpractice experience a plus
  • Multiple jurisdictional experience a plus
  • Insurance and claims management designations/certifications a plus
  • Adjuster Licenses and/or willingness to obtain necessary Adjuster Licenses
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Working Conditions/Travel

Work can be performed remotely or in an office environment. Position requires approximately 10% domestic travel and exposure to healthcare work environments.
